Final Digipak

Digipak Construction pt3

This is my Digipak poster. I feel it needs to be developed more. I think the name can be a bit more creative and act as more of a logo. I also think the release date can be more bold.

Digipak Construction pt4

I have changes the placement of the name to create a more authentic look. I kept the black and white theme as well as adding grain to the images making them more fitting. I think I need to add more little touches such as a copyright logo. This will increase the authenticity and look more professional.

Digipak Construction pt2

I have made my first panel. I like the black and white colouring and want to keep this theme in the creation of the digipak. I want to keep the grainy effect as well as I feel it compliments the style of the artist.

Editing- outtake cuts

We decided to include out takes used when we were filming. Looking at other music videos I found that the frequently include things like this to break the intensity of the video.

Editing- Production

This is our first bit of editing we did. This was challenging as we made a time-lapse clip as well as standard editing. The main difficulty was syncing it up with the song, this was very time consuming as keeping the video on the beat was not easy to do.

Editing- Rough Cut 1

This is my first cut for my music video. I want to improve some of the elements used in the video. I want to increase the amount of cuts used to create a faster paced video in some parts. Including bloopers will create a more atmospheric video and increase the authenticity of it by making it look more legitimate. I also feel the time-lapse used is out of place and doesn't reference anything else in the video. I still like the idea of using a time-lapse, but I want to change it to feel more linked to the song and themes of grime and grit.

New Story Board

Change In Song

Due to the fact that our actors were difficult to get hold of and organising a date and time to film was very tedious. We decided to change the song so we are able to mange just one singer who is more flexible with time. We changed the song to Ruarri Joseph's "Tales of grime and grit" the song was  more alternative rock rather than punk rock.

Location and Actor Planning

Barry Island and Special Effects Task

In this task I went to Barry Island, I learnt many techniques for filming and editing I could incorporate with my music video. We made a news report and used final cut editing software. I have also had experience with using a green screen and found it really beneficial. I found that I had learnt a lot as it really taught me how to use final cut as well as gave me an understanding of what to expect when editing my video. With special effects, we were able to add soundtracks and other kinds of music/effects.

Fashion and Props

Fashion and Props on PhotoPeach

The black t-shirt and black jeans go well with this genre, I feel it grasps the dark emotional colours needed for this song and genre. Black represents a evil sinister being. The idea of rebellion fits well with this as it gives that same approach of not playing by the rules, creating this dark atmosphere.

School uniform will be worn by the other students. This will set the main actors to look different and stand out more than the other students. The idea that the actors will be out of uniform will link well with the themes of rebellion and the idea of not fitting in.

I think it will be a good idea to challenge the costume change rule. I think the video is happening in one location so there isn't much need to change it all around as that would create a more surreal element. In the original video they don't change there clothes either. I think it would be a good idea to stay true to that.

Inital Ideas Pitch

For my music video I am doing Teenagers by My Chemical Romance, my video will be a Narrative based Performance as I feel it follows the codes and conventions of this genre. I feel with a Narrative based Performance you are able to combine the two to create a more powerful video. I chose a song that wouldn’t restrict me as much as others so the concept of teenagers could be shot in more local locations.
My video will feature themes such as boredom, rebellion and a hostile view towards school. It will mainly have an illustrative approach to it, but with some aspects of amplification using mise en scene with links to the song lyrics. The idea for our narrative follows a group of students who are rebelling from their day-to-day repetitive school life. The performance will be in the narrative, as they will be playing their instruments in the school area. There will be different locations for them to play and will be switching back and forth to performance and the students going about their business. The video will feature either a prologue or epilogue to bring the timing up to 3 minutes.
The locations I will use will mainly be in the school, as that will create the best atmosphere. The opening scene will feature in a classroom before the students decide to destroy everything. When performing I will use a wide range of locations from the stage to smaller classrooms.
For clothing, I want my actors to wear clothes that would make them stand out or not fit in, to help fit the idea of rebellion. I think having other characters in school uniform would help this idea as it would give the representation of breaking out of the normal life.
My actors will preferably be a band as that will be most effective because I can use them for both the performance side and the narrative side of things. It doesn’t matter who the background actors are as long as they are teenagers or look like that age. I will like to include a few teachers, I want them to look quite dominating at first, but as the video goes on they will lose their power.

Thinking Of A Concept

This mind map was really beneficial for the development of my ideas. I have thought about what genre and song to do, I have also thought about important themes. Overall I have learnt the importance of initial ideas as they can really help to bring forward a concept that will create an interesting video that will attract audiences. I found doing this task, the most important idea is themes. This is because you can tun base your video around that and work with it.

My Music Video Research

My Chemical Romance are a Alternative rock/ Pop punk/ Emo/ Post Hardcore band. They formed in 2001 and in 2003 they signed under Reprise Records. Under them they have released three albums which was distributed by Warner Bros Records. Reprise records have a range of Artists such as Michael Buble and Fleetwood mac. They also have artists from different genres like IYAZ who is a hip/hop singer. They disagree with being labelled emo as Gerrard Way (lead vocals) claims emo is garbage.

From this task I have learnt about My Chemical Romance. Looking at them really helps me to understand the themes to use when creating this video. I now know what genre to think about when in production and what to look at for inspiration. Overall I feel that this is a good genre to use as well as the song. It has good links to themes and will fit in with the actors I have as they are of "Teenage" age so it will look more authentic.

Music Labels

From this task I have learnt about the major companies in the music industry. I have also learnt about the smaller independent companies. I have noticed that they have a diverse range of music videos which gives them more publicity as they reach out to all types of target audiences. We see similarities in the major and minor industry such as the diverse range of genre. They also use social media to promote their videos, this is something I could think of when producing mine.

Music Directors

This task has taught me about the different music video directors. Through this I have learnt many different ways of stylising my video. I have noticed that they all work in their own individual style, this creates a unique ability in all of these directors making them more sought after than the average director. I have also noticed directors often pair which artists for a number of songs I think this is because they are familiar with each others work. I will think about this when I produce my music videos it will be beneficial to put my own twist on what is referred to as normal.

Mood Board

Much like the timeline, this is a mood board which shows the development of music consumption. With this I am able to understand different way of listening to music from the past of present. With this it tells us the many different ways of listening to music and what I need to think about when looking at ways of showing presenting my video.

Music Consumption

This task has taught me how the consumption of music has developed. The idea that it has come so far is really shocking also piracy is much easier now. I need to think about new technologies such as YouTube when creating my music video and how it will benefit me. I have seen that the internet is probably the most dominant figure when it comes to listening to music. Nowadays it is there at a click of a button so we can decide what we watch rather than having to through t.v or radio. I have to make my video visually appealing so benefit most from this. I could also feature links to i-tunes or my digipak.

Music video theory

Doing this task was very similar to previous tasks I have done before. Doing this task really helped me to give a detailed understanding of the genre here and how it is different to the others. As I haven't done a genre like this I was able to explore different techniques used as well as theories which will have an impact on my decision on what video I will make as well as what genre to pick

Audience Research

Create your free online surveys with SurveyMonkey , the world's leading questionnaire tool.

This task was incredibly beneficial for me as it helped me to see how other individuals felt about music videos. I learnt through my survey what others look for in music videos so I have a much better understanding on creating a music video that will appeal to others. Through my results I have learnt that narrative videos are the most appreciated.

Music Video Analysis

Doing this whole task has really helped me to understand the theories behind music videos. It has given me a great insight and good knowledge towards what I will be creating. I understand different techniques I can utilize to achieve the best grade possible. I also know that different genres have different ways of presenting their views which I need to be cautious about.

Genre Research

Mega Task Part 3 on PhotoPeach
Hip hop/Rap- N.W.A create an unsettling vibe in their music videos. Their positioning in the first image represents them as angry and intimidating. They are almost amplifying the idea that black people in America are gangsters and get into trouble with the police. The black stereotype fits in with the Rap genre as it is promoted in the lyrics and videos of their music. In this particular video the police officers are black, this represents the idea of equality as if it would have been a white police officer it could suggest that white people have more power over black.

Alternative Hip-hop/Rock- The Clint Eastwood video is a narrative with a disjunctive relation of visuals to the song. This is a very different genre to the more mainstream of just standard hip-hop or rock so there isn't really any stereotype to the style. The idea that it is animated could be targeted towards children, but the lyrics and concept of the video tell us otherwise as is has more mature themes to it. This could go against codes and conventions as when you think or cartoons stereotypically they are aimed at younger children and less for adults.

Drum and Bass/Dubstep- Blind faith primarily uses a handheld camera shot going through the video. The video has a disjunctive relation of visuals to the song but goes with the genre as usually their videos don't really have any link with the song. The effects model is used in this video through the use of the handheld shot as we feel like we could be there and drawn in. As we are following people it is difficult to distinguish the idea that it is not real because the way it is presented tells us it has a documentary feel. I think the gritty effect of the video having such things as drug taking goes with the stereotype as usually people associate drug users with drum and bass.

K-Pop/Pop- Gangnam Style features a very odd music video. I have noticed it favours the male above female as we see females preforming tasks such as fanning him and generally being the back up dancers could suggest that females are inferior. Laura Mulvey's theory of the male gaze holds true to this video as we see females being targeted in very sexual ways. Females are treated more for "eye candy" rather than an equal character suggesting men have more power in this video.

Pop/Hip hop- The genre of this song is Pop, but it has Hip hop roots. We see this with the clothing, sideways caps and vests represent the hip hop look. Switch also uses the male gaze a Will Smith has five girls dancing around him wearing little clothing. Apart from Will we don't see any other males only females. This again could show the male gaze as the video is mainly intended for a male audience as it is focusing on women,

Overall in this task I have learnt the different representations of genres and what goes and what doesn't. I have seen different theories used and noticed the male gaze is used more in mainstream pop videos rather than the more underground style music. I now understand what type of clothing and characters to use depending on the genre as that is a main thing when making my music video.

Music Video Analysis

The video uses diagetic sound when he smashes the window of the car. This can be linked with the aggresive style of the music. The smash feels like it should be in the song and suits the video. The tracking shot is used to follow the man running. The fisheye lens is used to exaggerate the the emotions of the man running. Using a hand held shot makes the video more gritty and links well with the London grime scene. When he is holding the bat we can see he is the villain in the scene. Strangely the villain is portrayed as the main character and we follow him instead of the more conventional videos in which we follow the hero.
This video is a narrative based video. It uses a rural setting to help get the feel of seclusion. The use of only two characters through majority of the video also helps. Using the woman wearing white personifies a guardian angel as she saves the man from killing himself and brings love back into his life. Using the slow motion when she is running adds to the effect giving the angelic like movement and being the saviour.

This is a performance based narrative video. Justin Timberlake cleverly links the video with the song as it is called Mirrors and the video is reflecting on someones life. The video jumps through time showing all stages of their life together. The video uses age stereotypically as we see the young couple up and jolly having fun whereas the old couple in their room moving and dancing slowly. There is an on going motif in this video such as the red book. This could symbolise the love the characters have for each other as like the book it is still there when they are old. Another use of symbolism is the mirrors. When the old lady looks through the mirror it shows her past and in the background of the younger versions it shows the bedroom of the older couple. This could link to the idea that the older couple can see what they have lived but for the younger couple its less apparent and their living in the moment not reflecting on it.

Without Me is a performance based narrative video using a comic book style with a tongue in cheek approach. Viewers would see this video in a negotiated approach, they would understand the meanings of the video and take on board the message, but they would neither accept it or reject it as they understand the video was presented as a joke. The parody of Batman is the main narrative and Eminem has used that to fit in with the song name "without me." It represents Eminem as a hero figure, this goes against the usual codes and conventions of the Rap genre as usually they are the enemy and embrace the fact they are not necessarily liked by the media and parents.

Doing this task I have learnt that different elements all contribute to the overall effect of the music video. I have also noticed that usually the video links with what the song is about linking to Godwin's illustrative theory. This has helped me in getting a rough idea of what my music video should be about, also if I wanted to add deeper meanings I can as I have gained knowledge of different genres and I am able to distinguish the different techniques used. Techniques like camera angles can be very effective when presenting a genre as they can be used to represent many different things.

Music Video Theories

Doing this task has made me understand the techniques used the theories behind the representations. I know what camera angles and editing is needed to make the video interesting. My attention to detail has been increased helping me to understand that a piece of clothing or a simple camera angle can make a different impact on each person who views my video.

Digipak Adverts

From doing this task I have gained knowledge in what makes a good digipak. I know how to follow or challenge the codes and conventions depending on what genre I decide to use. This could be achieved by the lighting or amount of images used. Understanding this can really be beneficial for me as I can now create the best atmosphere I see fit. When thinking about the genre I feel it suits Indie best, I will keep that in mind and maybe try to feature some of that style into what I choose to do.

Digipak

From this task I learnt what a digipak was and the business surrounding it. Also how they've fallen out of popularity over recent years as things are becoming more digital. Also what designs give off certain effects and how I need to pay attention to what image I'm portraying when making my digipak and poster. This task has given me all the necessary research needed to start designing my own digipak.

Student Music Video Analysis

http://rlockettkirk97.wix.com/task-6

Doing this task I learned what makes a good video and what you have to do to get it a high mark. I found mise en scene is important as changing costumes is important. Location also means a lot as it sets the atmosphere of the whole video. Editing and camera angles are also important, that's why I will use a fast song so I can use a lot of different techniques. I have also noticed what can't be done such as rap songs as they are too difficult to lip sync, also finding a good location isn't easy. I have found also limitations with casting a lot of actors as I will need to get them together and rely on too much. So I will aim to use as little amount of actors as I can.

Branding

Doing this task really benefited me. I learnt about different styles you need to take into consideration when thinking about my music video. Also when I make a digipak. I also learnt the importance of costumes to fit the genre. The branding can be used to challenge or go with the codes and conventions when I'm thinking of a concept I will definitely have a rough idea of clothing. A lot of music videos constantly change the characters outfits. This is to keep it fresh and not give the impression that it is being repeated.

Webpage Analysis

This task has taught me what makes a good and bad website. I have looked at colour schemes, typography and positioning to see what works and what doesn't. I will use what I learnt from this task and using all the elements above to help when making my digipak. The most important things are the colours as it must create an appealing atmosphere to the audiences. I need to fit it to the genre of which I am making to get the best reception from my target audiences.

History of Music Videos

Doing this task I have learnt that music videos have been around for longer than I had expected. I thought they originated in the late 60s but the had been going on since the 20s. Looking at the influences that The Beatles and Michael Jackson have made on the whole concept is very impressive. When thinking how they have developed makes me realise what I need to utilize. The idea that you used to have to leave your house to see them to now just going onto YouTube makes me understand the audience I am dealing with.
